S.E.: Morning!
JR: Good morning! How are you? S.E.: Good! Got something good to say, though. JR: What's that? S.E.: I was in Walmart and there was, like, a little drops, off course I didn't see it until later, it looked like mayonnaise or something like that, and I almost slipped! S.E.: And my right side of my right leg almost went out from underneath me, but my left leg was strong enough, I guess, to pull me back up. I didn't fall!

JR - Hi, Nora! NL - Hi. JR - What made you want to start my class? NL - Well, to learn to be better, balanced, and more flexible and just stronger in general, JR - What made you want to continue to go? NL - Because I was feeling better and I was improving. JR - What did you notice improving? NL - My ability to walk without so much pain. Marion used an inhaler to control COPD. By using martial arts breath techniques, her breathing has improved and she no longer has to use an inhaler. My husband and I (ages 69 and 74) were feeling the need to add strength and balance training to our walking regimen. We were both concerned about falling and losing muscle mass and strength as we aged. We were introduced to JR by a friend who met him through a business networking group. After an initial phone call, we were impressed by his extensive background as a martial arts teacher, and his interest in providing strength and balance training for seniors based on martial arts principles. We just completed our first 12 session package and immediately signed up for a second round. We think the cost is both very reasonable and well worth the money.
JR is located in southern California; we live in northern California. JR trains us together remotely, via Zoom. We started this before the coronavirus changed everything, and we are so grateful that his tech skills allow us to continue working with him despite our physical distance. In the time we have been working with him, we have found ourselves doing interesting movements, and we have both noticed improved strength, posture and muscle tone. We have a small home, with little room for exercise, but since you need almost no equipment and the movements do not require much space, his program is great for us. We each have some minor physical limitations, and JR has been mindful and sensitive to them, demonstrating modifications and workarounds that allow us to benefit from the exercises without injuring ourselves. We have noticed that some of our limitations have begun to improve as well, which is really exciting. My husband, who has lost height over the last several years, say she feels a little taller! In addition, the movements are training our brains in new ways and as a side benefit, are preparing us to better defend ourselves in case we are physically attacked. JR is an excellent teacher. He is open, good humored and patient (I am slow to catch on to the movements sometimes), and he uses concrete examples and clear demonstrations to teach us new moves and to refine moves we have already learned. He welcomes all questions both during and after sessions and enjoys explaining the benefits, nuances and purpose of the movements he is teaching. It is clear to us that he loves what he does and truly enjoys the progress we make. In short, we feel very fortunate to have encountered JR, and would recommend him to anyone interested in improving their strength, balance and muscle tone. Eleanore saved herself from a fall in the shower. Her reaction speed has increased and she has more confidence. |
